We just don't have the budget!

It’s the most common reason schools give for not investing in languages.
And it’s valid ... partially. But here’s a question worth asking:
Is it truly a budget issue … or a priority decision?
Because every school is investing somewhere.
Reading. Maths. Interventions. Yes, they are all important.
But languages often misses out. Not because it doesn't matter, but because it's easier to defer.
Until it isn’t. Until it becomes:
- Hard to evidence
- Inconsistent across year groups
- Dependent on individual staff confidence
Budget matters, but so does where it’s directed.
If you picked your scheme on the basis of budget, you've already lost money.
Investing in a good languages scheme is actually budget friendly. Because you also get reading, phonics, speech and language.
Where do you sit on language investment?
